The Significance of the Daffodil

By April S Kenyon

The daffodil, also commonly referred to as the Narcissus or the Jonquil, has long served as a symbol of springtime, new beginnings, and hope. The typical image of the daffodil is that of the trumpet daffodil, with its bright yellow petals and long trumpet swaying steadily in the spring winds, never bending or breaking. The daffodil is the symbolic flower for the Christian season of Lent and is known in England as the Lent Lily. It is the birth flower for the month of March, the traditional gift for the 10th anniversary, and the national emblem of Wales. This beautiful first flower of spring also serves as the symbolic flower of the American Cancer Society, representing hope, bravery, and strength.

A Symbol of Hope

The daffodil has been selected as a symbol for the American Cancer Society, as it is a cheerful, optimistic flower representative of prosperity and rebirth—the rebirth of the patient living a prosperous cancer free life. The characteristics of the daffodil denote amazing strength, beauty, and bravery. As the first flower to bloom each spring, this bright and beautiful symbol of new beginnings must often withstand the harsh and bitter winds of early springtime. The daffodil has traditionally been portrayed in poetry and prose to symbolize respect, chivalry, enduring love, and happiness.

The Luck of the Daffodil

The daffodil is considered to be a lucky flower in almost every culture throughout the world, perhaps because there is no way of staring into its vibrant golden petals and feeling depressed. It is a flower said to bring prosperity and abundance to the person gazing upon it. In Welsh folklore, it is said that if you spot the first daffodil after the winter frost, you will have extraordinarily good luck involving wealth and abundance for the year to come. It is also an important flower to the Chinese on the Lunar New Year. It is believed that if you force a daffodil to bloom in your home during the Lunar New Year, your entire household will be blessed with good fortune. The daffodil is thought to be a lucky flower to give as an anniversary present too, as it symbolizes ever-lasting love and happiness. However, it is traditionally thought that you must give a bunch of daffodils together, as a single daffodil bloom could foreshadow much misery and misfortune.
